How to Index Your Website on Google
Follow these steps to help Google discover and index your website.
1. Set Up Google Search Console
The first step is to add and verify your website in Google Search Console.
Search Console allows you to monitor:
- Google indexing status
- Indexed and non-indexed pages
- Crawl issues
- Sitemap status
- Search queries
- Search impressions
- Search clicks
- Core Web Vitals
- Mobile usability and other technical signals
After verifying your website, check the Page Indexing report to understand which pages Google has discovered and which pages are excluded.
2. Create and Submit an XML Sitemap
An XML sitemap helps search engines discover important URLs on your website.
A typical sitemap may look like:
https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml
Depending on your CMS and SEO setup, your website may also have sitemap indexes such as:
https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml
Submit your sitemap through Google Search Console.
What Should Your Sitemap Include?
Your sitemap should generally contain important, canonical URLs that you want search engines to discover.
Avoid unnecessarily including:
- Duplicate URLs
- Redirected URLs
- Broken URLs
- URLs blocked from crawling
- Thin or low-value pages
- Pages that should not appear in search
3. Make Sure Google Can Crawl Your Website
Google must be able to access your important pages.
Check your robots.txt file and make sure you are not accidentally blocking important sections of your website.
For example, an incorrect robots.txt configuration can prevent search engines from crawling pages you actually want indexed.
Your website should also have a logical structure where important pages can be reached through normal links.
4. Check the Noindex Tag
One common reason a page is not indexed is the presence of a noindex directive.
For example:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">
If an important page contains noindex, Google may exclude it from its index.
Check your website's important pages and make sure you are not unintentionally using:
- noindex
- nofollow
- Incorrect canonical tags
- Incorrect robots directives
5. Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection Tool
If you have published a new page and want to check whether Google can access it, use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
Enter your URL and check:
- Whether Google can access the page
- Whether the URL is indexed
- Whether the page has indexing issues
- The canonical URL selected by Google
- Whether the page is eligible for indexing
If the page is eligible and not yet indexed, you can request indexing.
However, requesting indexing does not guarantee immediate indexing.
6. Create High-Quality, Useful Content
Technical SEO alone is not enough.
Your website should contain useful content that genuinely answers the questions your target customers are searching for.
For example, a digital service company can create helpful pages such as:
- How to Index My Website
- SEO Service Provider in Bangladesh
- SEO Agency in Dhaka
- How to Start a Company in Bangladesh
- How to Register a Business
- Google Workspace Setup in Bangladesh
- Website Development Company in Dhaka
- Hire a Digital Marketer in Bangladesh
- Digital Marketing for Dental Clinics
- Digital Marketing for Hospitals
Each page should have a clear search intent and provide useful information rather than simply repeating keywords.
7. Improve Internal Linking
Internal links help Google discover relationships between pages on your website.
For example, an article about website indexing could naturally link to your:
- SEO service page
- Website development page
- Google Search Console-related content
- Technical SEO page
- Website maintenance service
Use descriptive anchor text instead of repeatedly using generic text such as “click here.”
A strong internal-linking structure can also help visitors discover related services and information.
8. Avoid Duplicate and Thin Content
Publishing hundreds or thousands of pages does not automatically mean your website will receive more organic traffic.
Pages should provide unique value.
Avoid creating many pages that are almost identical except for changing a city name or keyword.
For example, creating dozens of pages with the same content for:
- SEO Agency Dhaka
- SEO Agency Uttara
- SEO Agency Chittagong
- SEO Agency Rajshahi
without providing genuinely different local information can create a weak website structure.
Instead, make each important location/service page genuinely useful and relevant.
9. Make Your Website Mobile-Friendly
A large portion of web searches happen on mobile devices, so your website should work properly across:
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Laptops
- Desktop computers
Check:
- Responsive design
- Font size
- Navigation
- Buttons
- Page speed
- Image size
- Mobile layout
- Forms and contact options
A website that is difficult to use on mobile can provide a poor user experience.
10. Improve Website Speed and Technical SEO
Your website should load efficiently and provide a good user experience.
Review:
- Page loading performance
- Large images
- Unnecessary JavaScript
- CSS issues
- Broken links
- Redirect chains
- Server errors
- HTTPS
- Canonical URLs
- Structured data
- Mobile responsiveness
Technical SEO helps search engines crawl and understand your website more effectively.
11. Build Backlinks Naturally
Links from other relevant and trustworthy websites can help search engines discover your website and can contribute to your site's overall authority.
For example, your business may earn links through:
- Industry directories
- Business profiles
- Partner websites
- Local business publications
- Genuine guest contributions
- Useful resources
- Digital PR
- Original research
Avoid buying large quantities of low-quality backlinks or participating in manipulative link schemes.
Quality and relevance are more important than simply collecting a large number of links.
12. Create an SEO-Friendly Website Structure
A good website structure should make it easy for both users and search engines to understand your business.
For a digital service company, the structure could look like:
Home
- → Website Design & Development
- → SEO Services
- → Digital Marketing
- → Social Media Marketing
- → Google Ads
- → Web Application Development
- → Google Workspace Setup
- → Business Automation
- → Graphic Design
- → Video Production
Then support important service pages with helpful blog articles.
This creates topical relationships between your service pages and informational content.
